This month we have , KELLYS LOT , From the USA ,They will do a workshop for the School Children of Timmergreen School in Arbroath, on Friday afternoon,
Friday evening will see them perform in the Black Abbott, Montrose 9pm till 12.
Saturday is a busy day for them , Saturday early afternoon , 1pm till 2pm , you can catch them up close in the Abbey Music shop ,Kirk Square ,Arbroath. come down have a coffee, speak to them about music ect,.
Saturday early evening they will be performing in Non Zero, Castle St, Dundee, 5pm till 7pm.
And your last chance to see them ,before they return to the States, is in the Fishermans Inn , high street Arbroath, 9pm till 12.

Hi , The Smokie Blues are doing a few days of blues on the 26th and 27th April in Memory of all the work Billy Allardyce, did for the blues ,Dundee and Angus in particular. Billy did a lot of work to keep blues alive what with , helping the D B B , and running the blind mans forum, also all the charity work he helped with .Billy past away last year after a brave battle with Cancer HE WILL BE MISSED ,RIP

Paddy Maguire was born in Hollyhead, Wales, and grew up in both Cornwall & Ireland , where his family moved to when he was two years old. Growing up in a musical household and exposed to his parents’ eclectic record collection that included the likes of Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder and Dire Straits, he was particularly drawn to the guitar – being taken by his parents to an Rory Gallagher concert left the young Maguire awestruck and in no doubt about which was the instrument for him.

One of Englands best West coast/swing blues bands, with the very talented & inimitable Scotswood Slim.
Hollow-bodied guitar, upright bass, shuffling drums and big toned harmonica, No Time For Jive have rocked up over 20 years of playing their blend of West Coast style R & B Swing and Blues that few British bands seem to capture, making them firm favourites on the North East music scene.
A tight four piece with a big sound who are BRIAN LYNAM (a.k.a. Scotswood Slim) Lead singer & harp player, writer of the band's original numbers. NAT McLEAVE.Drummer with the shuffle style. N.T.F.J. needed to get that sound. Nat came to the band after playing with lots of soul and brass outfits, highly regarded as a musician with a great ear. KEITH FORSYTH (a.k.a. Beefy La Slap). Vocalist and slap bass player, Beef came in from the Rockabilly scene (The Sidekick Trio) and has become one of the best slap bass players around. PETE REDHEAD came to the band from that English school of R & B but has turned into a great T. Bone stylist, influenced by the likes of Jnr. Watson, Alex Shultz and Kid Ramos etc.

Formed in 2008, Jed Potts and the Hillman Hunters have cultivated a stage performance which is exciting and spontaneous. Drawing from the rich well of classic 50’s and 60’s American blues the trio (completed by drummer Jonny Christie and bassist Pauric Logue) stay true to the traditions of the music whilst also taking risks. The Vigilantes began gigging some six months ago following a period of putting their own Americana material together. Veterans of the rhythm and blues scene, John Halliday and Art Pritchard spent around twenty years gigging the length and breadth of the country with much loved rhythm and blues combo Little Wolves. During that time playing live regularly throughout Scotland and, on occasion, South of the Border. The pair left for musical reasons some eight years ago with the intention of getting together to write their own material but circumstance forced the duo apart until some eighteen months ago. Since then they have concentrated on getting original material together and have recently begun reappearing as a live act. Influenced by songwriters such as Steve Earle, the late great Doug Salvon and Joe Ely, The Vigilantes combine this love of well-crafted Americana with their love of the blues to produce outlaw music with an authentic feel. Combining guitar, mandolin, harmonica and slide, The Vigilantes perform music true to their heart with due reference to the wide variety of influences they love and repeat.

Well once again we have had a busy year and a bit, from our full day of blues in Dundee at the end of last year ,with some tremendous bands visiting us , Starting with, The Yah,s from Dumfries ,Ben Ruth and the convulsions, the Gary Johnson trio[three card trick] Wang Dang Delta, from Perth, Wolftrain, the Robbie Hill Band, the brilliant Jenna Hooson band who came up from down south, We had the Brilliant P.A.U.L. Lamb from the U S A .We also had the return tour of the unforgettable Cats, the talented Willie Logan played a great gig in the Black Abbott for us .All of you who saw the Maggie Ross band when she toured for us, are so fortunate as sadly Maggie Passed away this year this year , Maggie will be missed ,not only for her talent but also for her bubbly outlook in life RIP. We had the Hexmen from Liverpool , my good friend Del Bromham & his blue devils came up for a tour , Since 2004 Kyle Bendix had promised me, he and his band Dr Bendix would come over from Norway to do a tour for the Smokie blues organisation and this year we succeeded in doing just that , and i can tell you it was well worth the wait Thanks to Kyle and all the band , hope we meet up again sometime .Robin Bibi travelled from London to tour the north east, we liked him so much Robin and his band are booked for 1st Feb 2013, in Coast, 2nd feb in Non Zero [Dexter’s] and 2nd feb evening time in the Black Abbott, so if you missed the extraordinary band this year put it in your diary for next year. We had some great gigs with rockabilly band s ,the Buick 55s played regular for us in coast , west port bar , we had Bad Boogaloo up from Stirling,
Finishing of this year will be the Buick 55s who will play up to and past the NEW YEAR in coast ,
We have had numerous band inquiries wanting to come to the lovely north east of Scotland ,If they do come it is entirely up to you guys out there if the venues support them you have to support the venue , simple.
The Smokie Blues are venturing to promote BLUES IN SCHOOLS this coming year , if there are any Bluesmen, or Blues Bands out there prepared to give up some time to do some workshops in Schools we would be very grateful , obviously this is a non paying venture ,your reward is in the pleasure of seeing these kids develop , alfie@smokieblues.com

Well last night at Hospitalfield House in Arbroath was very pleasant surprise for me ,having purchased a ticket for a measly £8 i sat back with my Dram wondering just what was in front of me as i had never heard Andy Spiller who is local or in fact Josh Harty billed as a Country blues singer songwriter, from North Dakota.
As i looked around the venue which i visit regular when Allan Steadman puts on his Jazz night ,it holds well over 100 people , i would say with a rough estimation about 50 personnel there not bad for a couple of unknowns artists in a jazz venue . surprisingly though 99.9% were from out of town ,as i pondered to myself where are all the blues punters tonight resident to Arbroath ,this gig was well promoted, the tickets were reasonably cheap, and it was the end of the month , so everyone who work was paid. Anyway what i am trying to say is the people from Arbroath who were not there really missed a great night of LIVE MUSIC. Andy Spiller was first up as Support to Josh Harty , Andy kicked off with a song about Hurricane Katrina, River Take Me ,he continued to take us on a journey of his travels with some beautiful guitar playing and really imaginative lyrics. Ending with a rendering of some tunes from the great movie Brother Where art though, that hour was worth the entrance fee alone . After a refurbishment of my Glenfiddich, i sat back down wondering if the standard would be upheld by Mr Harty, Josh introduced himself and proceeded to explain the meaning of each song he wrote , this was country Blues of the highest standard , reminded me of my good friend Doug Macleod the way he went about his business to entertain this very enthusiastic audience, after playing for about two hours , finishing with a brilliant song he wrote YOU CAN ALWAYS COME HOME , three encores later he left the stage , to me this is what live blues is all about , this couple of very talented artist did not make a fortune but what they did do was make fifty odd people who came out on a very cold night satisfied that they had seen something really good ,and went walking home with a smile on their faces ,[ next time you see a poster blues gig tonight] take a chance pay your eight pounds and be pleasantly surprised . This certainly is hot, especially the boogie based opening title track ‘Don't Mess with Me'. They got it dead right on this one and its cooking - great boogie feel, fat dirty guitar and wildcat vocal. Seriously if they voted Joanne Shaw Taylor best British female blues vocalist in those blues awards then they were looking in the wrong place because Maggie is by light years a better singer - and she's singing in her own natural voice. It sounds ‘real'.
